Space the final frontier, the great beyond that man has yet to understand. Filled with massive black holes, infinite planets and if Marvel is to be believed talking raccoons and adorable humanoid baby plants. The much awaited Guardians of the galaxy vol.2 is out and it’s a box office hit (big surprise).
it’s like somebody told the poster designer to use every color in the rainbow
Guardians 2, like nearly everything else from the MCU is a well-made enjoyable piece of film. It has enough jokes to keep you entertained, but also knows when to dial down on the comedy at emotional points. It’s a great film, some are even saying it’s the great movie that marvel has ever produced, I am not one of those people. For all its merits guardians 2 did not exceed any expectations. But when the expectations for the movie were pretty high to begin with that’s not a bad thing. But it did feel like they went through a lot of the motions that the first guardians did. It’s a great film, it just didn’t blow my mind like winter soldier or Antman which no one expected to be as good as they were. In short a movie that lived up exactly to its hype.
The whole cast is back this time around with Starlord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket and the now pocket sized Groot reminding us why we fell in love with these characters within the first five minutes. And baby Groot, is Just So Freaking Adorable.
I like to call him Bonsai Groot
Other returning characters include Gamora’s evil step sister Nebula and Yandu with his magic whistle controlled arrow, more on him later. New characters include the ‘sovereign’ a race of conceited douchebags(rocket’s words not mine), Mantis a hot girl- bug hybrid who gets how you feel (for real, she’s an empath), and Ego who aside from being a god like being called the Celestial is also Peter Quill’s dad (Gasp).
So if you haven’t watched it yet go check it out before you read the rest, for there are spoilers ahead.
Spoilers Ahead
The fast and furious movies could really take a page out of the Guardians hand book in how to make interesting, funny and believable team dynamics. I loved the character interactions and the way they played off each other. Even the new addition to the team like Nebula and Mantis were likable enough that I didn’t mind the team expanding so much. Mantis is not my favorite, but I find that her general innocence and rather meek nature in a refreshing addition to a team that has one too many sarcastic badasses.
The movie knows how to keep you grinning, whether it’s Drax’s dialogue or baby Groot’s wide eyed adorableness the movie kept you wanting more. My favorite though was Rocket, the way he took out Yandu’s goons with his bag of tricks that would make batman envious, left a smile on my face wider than the joker’s (please don’t shout blasphemy because I’m using DC references).
