Sarcastic Movie Review: Spiderman Homecoming

Spiderman gets his first starring role in the all encompassing super giant that is the Marvel cinematic universe, with which it finally feels like the arachnid based superhero has come home (and the movie is called Homecoming! Holly crap I just got that). And In an opinion that might be widely disagreed with is the best Spiderman movie of all time.

Our boy Peter Parker has had no less than 6 major big budget movie releases since the start of this century, and the reason that I would put Homecoming on top of the list is for one reason alone. It remains the truest to the comic book character, and somehow acted as a good origin story without even shooting Uncle Ben for the hundredth time.

In short it’s a fun movie that is very lighthearted and should not be missed. There are no deep themes addressed, and no world threatening villains either. But it keeps you entertained throughout, which should be the primary goal of any movie.

The review (minor spoilers)

Tom Holland was great, and I can’t stress this enough. His portrayal of the character as both Spidey and Peter was done to perfection. And I’m someone who quiet enjoyed both Toby Maguire’s and Andrew Garfield’s performance of the web slinger. But in the end Tom is just better, mainly because he had a sense of innocence and very optimistic outlook on his situation that the others did not.

Here’s the thing that really took me by surprise,  I went in seeing the trailers expecting to not like many things about this movie: from Spidey’s new tech based suit, to his friend Ned knowing his secret and even  the Vulture. But oh was I wrong. Ned and Peter’s friendship was honestly one of the funniest things in the movie, and I just fell in love with Karen a.k.a the suit lady by the end.

And as for the Villain, with Spiderman having one of the best rouges gallery out there with the likes of Doc Ock and Venom, the Vulture never stood out as a particularly interesting villain. So my expectations were low for him going in. But Michael Keaton’s performance added a surprising amount of dept to a character who is primarily a guy in a bird suit (guess his experience in Birdman really paid off). They also gave him a compelling back story which made you care more about the character
