The Mortal Kombat series has quiet a legacy attached to it, as one of the original fighting games that popularized the genre and with over ten sequels, its history is intertwined with the history of gaming itself. In its long run it has showcased not only a now well refined fighting engine, but also a needlessly complicated storyline and a horde of playable characters.
Perhaps a bit too many if these following 5 mortal combatants are to go by:
Kobra
Let’s start with Kobra, now creating original characters is hard, especially when deadlines are due and you already made a female version of Goro. So why not take the easy route and steal a character from a rival franchise, make just enough changes to prevent a copyright lawsuit and call it a day.
Kobra is Ken from the “Street fighter” franchise. That’s it, nothing even bolted on to it. They didn’t even try to make any changes other than just turning him evil.
But what makes him particularly dumb is that with the few changes they did make to him, that is giving him a snake theme and calling him Kobra they inadvertently ripped off another character, which is Johnny Lawrence from the Karate kid/ Kobra kai series!
The original and the Netflix adaptation
Which somehow even made his unoriginality redundant.
But what makes him truly worthy of this list is that fact that they named him ‘Kobra with a K’. Which perfectly encapsulates Mortal Kombat’s long standing tradition of not knowing how spellings work as seen in every single one of the games titles.
Mokap
Now I’ll admit it takes balls to enter the Mortal Kombat tournament, but up next we have someone who took the whole balls thing in a more literal sense by sticking a bunch of them to his body.
Sticky balls lol!
Mokap was the mokap artist for one of Johnny Cages movies and for some reason thought entering a death tournament with literal gods and dragon men was a good idea. Maybe he has a death wish or maybe he did it for the exposure, but one thing there’s no doubt in is that this stunt double is a moron.
Meat
Nothing can be said about meat that can’t be explained by taking one good look at him.
ewwwww
Meat is one of Shan Tsung’s experiments that escaped before he was was completed, only in this case being incomplete means NOT HAVING ANY SKIN!
In a tournament were certain fighters have extra body parts (Goro) or cybernetically enhanced ones (Jax) a guy rocking up without something as basic and essential as skin and his entrails dripping all over the place before even the match begins, might not be the best fighter you want to bet your money on.
Rain
Scorpion and Sub-zero are perhaps the most iconic characters from the entire series. The yellow and blue ninjas were so popular that the series decided to give us ninjas of every colour of the rainbow.
