The Greek gods are some of the most powerful beings in all of mythology. They could control the weather, the seas, and even the destiny of mortals. You’d think that these ultra-powerful, old and immortal beings would act with the wisdom of the ages. But instead they usually acted really childish and petty. With their actions usually being more eyerollingly cringe worthy than most teen dramas. So here are five times the Greek gods really messed up and went a bit over board
Zeus and Hera’s constant Marital Troubles
Zeus and Hera were always fighting. Even though they were married, they couldn’t seem to get along. Hera was always jealous of Zeus’s numerous affairs, and Zeus was always trying to hide his indiscretions from Hera. Their constant fighting led to a lot of destruction, and they didn’t seem to care about the mortals who got caught in the crossfire. For an in-depth look at this check out 5 times Zeus couldn’t keep it in his pants.
Dionysus Dealing With Pentheus
Dionysus is the god of wine and partying hard, and is in general a pretty chill dude. That is except when it comes to the case of his cousin Pentheus. When Dionysus achieved godhood, Pentheus banned the worship of his god cousin and forbade the women of Cadmeia to partake in his rites.(which sounds like a strange way of ancient and mythical cockblocking).
Dionysus tricked Pentheus, disguised as a lady, out to keep an eye on the Bacchic rituals (the rites he had banned), where Pentheus expected to see some sort of sexual activates, the actual ritual was a lot darker. The girls of Cadmus saw him in a tree and believed him to be a wild creature. They pulled Pentheus down and tore him limb from limb as a sacrifice to the part of their rituals.
Maybe Dionysus’ parties are less fun than you imagined.
Hades abducting Persephone
Hades was the god of the underworld, the dead and strangley enough riches. But despite his rather dark monikers he was a pretty stand up guy, especially when compaired to his brothers Zeus and Posiedon when it came to lovers(Again read about Zeus’s dating life HERE). That is with the exception of his only love affair with Persephone.
Hades and he fell in love with Persephone, a minor goddess and daughter of Demeter. He abducted her and took her to the underworld, where she became his queen. Persephone’s mother Demeter was so distraught over her daughter’s disappearance that she stopped caring about the world and allowed winter to come. This caused a lot of suffering for mortals, who depended on Demeter for their food.
A bit too handsy there Hades mate
Which caused Zeus to get involved (who gave Hades the abduction Idea in the first place) and allow Persephone to return to the mortal realms for a few months in a year, to satisfy Demeter. But hey at least Hades wifed her and made her the queen of the underworld which is…something.
