Sarcastic Movie Review: Brightburn

Brightburn is the new psychological horror movie offering from director James Gunn about a mysterious boy from another world adopted by a couple in rural America, as the boy grows he discovers that he has powers beyond his wildest imagination and he must learn to use them….okay I’m gonna stop right there. The PLOT is what if superman was evil. That’s it. No amount of fluff text is going to change that. And I know enough things have been changed that DC and Warner bros can’t shove stick labeled copyright infringement up James gun’s ass, but the basic plot is what if superman was evil…and was named Brandon instead of Clark…and channeling the spirit of Jason from the Friday the 13^th movies.

Brightburn is Hollywood’s latest attempt at coupling random genre’s with superhero movies in this case a superhero horror. And I must say it’s has created quiet an interesting premise. I’m a fan of old school slasher flicks and the movies are effective enough with a lumbering oaf who is bothered by injuries as much as a baby carriage would bother speeding locomotive. But give that same killer a grab bag of super powers and you have a near unstoppable evil.

And make No mistake this is a serial killer slasher flick. There was a point when budget super-psycho goes after his first victim and you’re unsure what happen to them, and I wondered if the movie would cop out and redeem the kid, by not making him actually kill people – But Boy Was I wrong!

But the Movies not without its faults, for one thing I didn’t really like Kill- Al’s costume. I think it was supposed to be designed after a wasp, with Brandon explaining early on the movie about how wasps were predators or some shit.  But honestly he looked more like the secret love child of superman and the villain scarecrow to me.

Also other than the interesting premise the movie doesn’t have much else going for it. While it’s truly scary how easily Mirror universe superman can squash us mere mortals like flies, the movie doesn’t really explore the setting beyond the basic premise. It also seems to give the nature verses nurture debate the finger by planting its feet strongly on the nature camp, with Brandon having the Hollywood version of ‘the perfect parents’ but him still only getting a hard on while strangling kittens.
