Top 5 Gateway Anime to Introduce to Beginners

Full-metal Alchemist: Brotherhood

The Full-Metal Alchemist franchise is one of the best anime of all time. There are two versions of the story, full metal Alchemist and full metal alchemist brotherhood. Of the two I’ve chosen Brotherhood because it is the story followed in the original Manga version and because of its ease of availability on Netflix. But I’d say both the versions have their merits which a lot of people on the internet might disagree with (it okay to like more than one thing guys). FMA follows the story of the Elric brothers Edward and Alphonse who are both Alchemists.

Unlike Alchemy in the real world which can be described as medieval chemistry with weird symbols, Here Alchemy acts as a combination of science and magic which can do everything from creating instant statues to exploding people’s blood. The story follows the two brothers in their search for the fabled philosopher stone. But this anime is more that, at its heart it’s a story about family, loyalty, the importance of sacrifice and you guessed it Brotherhood. The FMA series also acts as a good test for your significant other, because if they do not tear up at any point in this anime, you might be dating a psychopath.

Death Note

And here we have the best argument to anyone who says such things as anime is boring, lame of for kids. What you do is strap them to a chair and forcefully make them watch ‘Death Note’ clock-work orange style. Don’t worry it’s not very long. But once their done watching it they will come to you with tears in their eyes as better human beings asking you for more such great shows. Death notes popularity is undeniable. It is good that that Netflix tried to make a shitty live action adaption of it. But if you’ve seen that and think it is anything like the actual anime let me tell you that relation is as similar as the crayon drawing of the Mona Lisa by an eight year old is to the real thing.

Death note follows the very simple premise of what happens when a brilliant yet egotistic young student gets a book from a death god. The book in question the ‘Death note’ if you will is far from ordinary as anyone whose name is written on dies. What follows is a cat and mouse game between two equally brilliant individuals and simple put there’s nothing else like it. Death note also holds the title as the only show on earth where a scene of a man eating potato chips in both tense and exciting.

One Piece

Now the people who know me personally might ask the question, did I make this entire list so that I can start talking about one piece and get more people into this series. The answer to which is: yes. Because one piece is perhaps one of the greatest stories ever written, and also holds the specialty as the only show in this list that’s still going on. But that’s not because it’s a relatively new entry, it has over 900 episodes and chapters at the time of writing and is not even close to ending. But the reason this is on the list is because it is the ultimate adventure story. And a pirate adventure at that.

As daunting as this series may seem it’s on-going nature makes it a must watch for those looking for a weekly show to watch or better yet Manga to read. The show is centered around the straw-hat pirate crew, a lovable group of misfits with a man made of rubber, a cyborg powered by cola and a musical skeleton. Despite its slow start it builds a world and takes you on a journey like nothing else will. And if nothing else a couple that watches One Piece together will stay together forever thanks to some weird form of Stockholm syndrome to the anime.
