Share what the Fox Says:

As we enter the month of Spooktober and the chilly winds prevent us from stepping outside, it’s perhaps the best time to cozy up with a loved one, pet or a favored pillow to get your fright on. But with so many horror movies out there it’s hard to pick out the ones that have an actual coherent story structure while offering something new  from those that just has a guy in a cheap mask jumping out and shouting “Boo” a lot. But there are definitely some great ones out there and here are 5 such horror movies with a unique selling point (USP).

1408

USP: A ghost story with no Ghost

The movie 1408 is easily one of the more interesting ghost stories you will find and it is based on a short story by Stephen King. The concept behind it being about a haunted room in the Dolphin hotel, the room numbered 1408. What truly makes this story a great one is the acting prowess of John Cusack as the lead and Samuel Jackson in a supporting role.

There is no real ghost in this story, but instead what we have is an evil freaking room. Most of the Movie consists just of John Cusack’s character a troubled horror book author, stuck in the said evil room as it dredges up regrets and fears from his troubled past. This movie is more leaned towards a thriller than outright horror, so it’s a must watch even if you spook easily. This movie also has multiple endings, definitely go for the theatrical ending rather than the director’s cut.

Brightburn

USP: Superhero Horror

With superhero movies being more popular than sliced bread these days, and with the constant mash up of the superhero genre with others, such as Guardians of the galaxy being a Superhero space opera and Ant-man being a superhero heist movie, it was only a matter of time before we got a superhero horror flick. And boy do they deliver with Brightburn: the story of an evil superman and just how terrifying a thing such power can be. We follow the story of the legally not Clark Kent as he goes through his super powered puberty, that cements the idea that there’s nothing more scary than hormonal teenagers.  Check out our full Brightburn review Here

The Babysitter

USP: Home alone meets Horror

Ever saw the Christmas classic ‘Home alone’ and thought that what that movie needed was more blood, gore and murder. Well then has Netflix got the movie for you, you weirdo. The babysitter could be more accurately described as a coming of age story with a horror twist. Its unusual nature and storytelling ensures there’s nothing else like it, where a young teenager must face his evil babysitter as an analogy for growing up and facing his fears (sure lets go with that). The evil babysitter even comes with free two dimensional psychotic friends in this Netflix movie and unlike most horror flicks this is actually a fun watch. While it contains a near comical amount of blood, it’s definitely a movie to watch if you like a bit of teenage tension rather than outright spooks.

Hell House LLC

USP: A planned found footage trilogy

A trilogy is a state of being most movies would love to be in. Something can be definitely called a franchise if three movies have been made in it. And yet most of the time the idea of a trilogy only surfaces after the first one has done well.  This is where the Hell House series stands out as a set of movies planned to be a trilogy from the very beginning, and hence giving a more complete narrative across the movies.
