4. Mother Miranda

Mother Miranda is proof that having centuries to think about something doesn’t necessarily make your decisions better.

After losing her daughter, Miranda became obsessed with bringing her back. Understandable grief eventually turned into decades of biological experimentation, manipulation, and creating increasingly horrifying creatures.

Then she found the Megamycete and basically decided: “Perfect. I’ll use this mysterious fungus to resurrect my daughter.”

What could possibly go wrong?

Miranda spent an absurd amount of time experimenting on people and manipulating entire communities while secretly preparing for her ultimate plan. Most people can’t keep a hobby going for six months. Miranda maintained an elaborate resurrection project for over a century.

Imagine if she put all that energy into something more useful: Like collecting Lego maybe. She could have a collection as large as a Tall Vampire Lady.

5. William Birkin

William Birkin was already a brilliant scientist, but apparently being brilliant wasn’t enough.

He wanted recognition. So when Umbrella threatened to take his research, Birkin responded in the most reasonable scientific manner possible: He injected himself with a horrifying experimental virus.

The result was a rapidly mutating biological nightmare that spends much of Resident Evil 2 turning into progressively larger and more eyeball filled versions of himself.

Birkin’s transformation is basically what happens when a workplace disagreement gets wildly out of hand. He could have negotiated, He could have quit, He could have found another pharmaceutical company.

Instead, he became a multi-stage boss fight.

Should have just taken an early retirement and picked up bird-watching instead, especially after the mutation. He needs to have some use for all those eyes.

Conclusion

Resident Evil villains rarely suffer from a lack of ambition. What they do suffer from is an astonishing inability to find normal hobbies.

They could have played golf, opened restaurants, collected stamps, or simply traveled the world being one of those travel influences

Instead, they chose viruses, parasites, cults, biological warfare, and world domination.

Maybe the real root of all evil is having too much free time.
