Most schools teach mathematics, science and maybe a foreign language: Hyakkaou teaches gambling.
And not the harmless kind where you bet five bucks with your friends. We’re talking about students gambling enormous amounts of money, possessions, social status and occasionally their entire futures.
The school’s hierarchy is basically determined by how good you are at gambling. Lose badly enough and congratulations: you’re now school property.
There’s even a system where students who fall heavily into debt can be treated as ‘house pets’ which is exactly as humiliating as it sounds. Imagine walking into school on Monday and realizing your social status has been destroyed because you lost a card game on Friday. The administration’s solution isn’t counseling. It’s get good scrub.
Hyakkaou isn’t an educational institution. It’s a casino that somehow received accreditation.
Imagine your school announces a new teacher. Nothing unusual right?
Then you discover that your new teacher is a yellow tentacle creature who has promised to destroy the Earth. And your assignment is to assassinate him before graduation.
Welcome to Kunugigaoka Junior High.
The students are given weapons and trained to kill their own teacher, who happens to be moving at Mach 20. The strangest part? He’s actually a pretty good teacher.
Koro-sensei teaches them mathematics, science, languages and life skills while simultaneously giving them opportunities to murder him. That’s one hell of a curriculum.
And somehow, despite the complete insanity of the situation, the students actually become better people.
True Cross Academy looks suspiciously like an ordinary prestigious school. But then that’s the trick. Underneath the fancy uniforms and classrooms is an institution connected to the training of exorcists who fight demons.
So you’re basically attending school while knowing that supernatural creatures are actively trying to invade your world. That’s bad enough.
Then you discover that one of your classmates has a rather unusual family background: He’s literally the son of Satan.
At that point your biggest concern shouldn’t be passing the math exam. It should be figuring out whether the school insurance covers demonic possession.
Anime schools have one major advantage over real schools: Their students don’t have to worry about boring stuff like standardized testing.
They have much bigger problems. Maybe real schools aren’t so bad after all. At least your chemistry teacher probably isn’t going to ask you to kill him before Friday or turn you into a house pet because you lost a match of Yu-Gi-OH.
