Across the Resident Evil series, we’ve encountered enough viruses, parasites, fungi, and questionable biological experiments to make a microbiologist immediately resign. From the classic T-Virus that created hordes of zombies to the increasingly ridiculous creations cooked up by Umbrella and its many competitors, Resident Evil has turned infectious diseases into an entire weapon category.
But what actually makes each one different?
Here’s a breakdown of the major viruses and biological agents in Resident Evil, without requiring a Ph.D. in fictional evil science or a trip to Raccoon City.
The original big one.
Discovered in Africa, the Progenitor Virus is essentially the foundation for most of Resident Evil’s later viral research. It came from a rare flower called Stairway to the Sun.
The virus can produce wildly different effects depending on the person’s genetics. Most people die horribly. A small number can develop extraordinary abilities.
Connected to: Umbrella, Spencer, Wesker, Jill, Alex Wesker.
Think of Progenitor as the grandparent of Resident Evil viruses.
The virus that started the zombie apocalypse.
Created through Umbrella’s research into Progenitor, the Tyrant Virus or t-Virus is responsible for the classic Resident Evil zombies.
It reanimates dead tissue, causes extreme mutations, and can turn infected creatures into increasingly horrifying monsters.
The iconic Tyrants were developed as powerful bio-organic weapons using t-Virus research.
Games: RE0, RE1, RE2, RE3, Code: Veronica and several others.
Basically:
Umbrella: “Let’s make a super-soldier.”
T-Virus: “Best I can do is zombie.”
3. G-Virus
Created by William Birkin, the G-Virus is arguably even more terrifying than t-Virus.
Instead of simply turning people into zombies, G causes rapid and unpredictable genetic mutation.
The infected host can develop new organs, limbs, eyes, and other mutations. William Birkin repeatedly transforms throughout Resident Evil 2.
The virus can also reproduce through implantation, making it particularly dangerous.
Game: Resident Evil 2
Birkin basically invented evolution with absolutely no quality control.
4. T-Veronica Virus
Created by Alexia Ashford, t-Veronica combines t-Virus research with ancient viral material.
Unlike ordinary t-Virus infections, it can allow the host to retain intelligence and control over their mutations.
Alexia becomes extremely powerful after infecting herself and entering cryogenic stasis.
Game: Resident Evil Code: Veronica
And yes, Alexia spending years asleep just to wake up and become a giant fire-breathing mutant is peak Resident Evil.
A combination of t-Virus research and the Abyss Virus discovered in the ocean.
It is particularly effective in aquatic organisms and is associated with mutations designed for underwater environments.
Game: Resident Evil Revelations
This is where Resident Evil starts reminding you that apparently even the ocean needs zombies.
The T-Phobos virus is unusual because it reacts to fear and adrenaline.
The more frightened an infected person becomes, the more likely the virus is to activate.
It was developed as part of Alex Wesker’s experiments.
Game: Resident Evil Revelations 2
Because apparently normal biological warfare wasn’t stressful enough.
